The future of UAVs (drones) in data collection

In honor of Earth Day, today’s post is about earth observation technology—specifically, drones. You may have noticed that drones—or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—have been surging in popularity lately. They seem to be all the buzz at industry trade shows, and it’s easy to see why—they’re just plain cool.

The number of possible uses for drones is incredible, including everything from agriculture, to reforestation, to asset management, to assisting with insurance claims, and so much more. However, the technology faces strict legal regulations presently, which leaves the future of drone usage in question.

section 179 tax deductions on business equipmentWith only days left in 2014, now is a good time to hurry and purchase needed business equipment if you want a hefty tax deduction. Here’s why: on December 19th, a new law was enacted that expanded Section 179 of the Tax Extenders Act to allow up to $500,000 in tax deductions on new and used equipment, as well as off-the-shelf software. That’s a $475,000 increase from the previous amount!

Father of GIS, Roger Tomlinson, Has Died

We are sorry to hear about the passing of Roger Tomlinson, considered the Father of GIS. Tomlinson was an English geographer and was the major innovator of modern computerized GIS. He will be greatly missed in the GIS community and elsewhere.

For those living in the U.S. of A., you’ve probably noticed in various ways how much the government shutdown affects us as citizens. It may even serve to educate some of us on how many programs are actually funded by the U.S. government. While a number of shut-down programs seem to have lesser impacts, there are many closed programs that will substantially affect considerably large numbers of people, and we hope that these programs will recommence quickly.
