The Cedar CP3 Rugged Smartphone has a volatile organic compound sensor

Trade workers can reduce the amount of time they spend exposed to dangerous pollutants with the volatile organic compound, or VOC, sensor on the Cedar CP3 Rugged Smartphone from Juniper Systems.

The volatile organic compound sensor on the CP3 measures the air every second for pollutants commonly found in trade work. Paints, aerosol sprays, cleansers, fuels, pesticides, and other substances commonly used with building materials contain VOCs, which can affect short- and long-term health.

Mitigating exposure to VOCs is possible with the built-in VOC sensor and app on the CP3. Users can expose the sensor to the air by opening the rubberized port cover emblazoned with “VOC” on the bottom right edge of the CP3. The AGM Air app on the CP3 refreshes every second when it’s opened to alert users about air quality. Three air quality levels – clear, turbid, and pollution – indicate the amount of volatile organic compounds in the air. Clear is within a healthy range, turbid is moderately unhealthy, and the pollution level should be avoided as it is unhealthy.

The Cedar CP3 Rugged Smartphone volatile organic compound sensor responds to a toxic compound sprayed from an aerosol can.

VOCs are organic compounds emitted as from some solids and liquids that can vary from highly toxic to non-toxic, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Trade workers from painters to plumbers and electricians can track and limit exposure to harmful organic compounds that cause a range of maladies, including  headache, nausea, fatigue, and irritation. More serious health effects from volatile organic compounds include liver and kidney damage and cancer, according to the EPA.

“The CP3 was engineered to take a beating, but your health shouldn’t,” said Cody Draper, the Cedar product manager at Juniper Systems. “The volatile organic compound sensor ensures you’re working in a non-hazardous environment.”

The sensor, however, does not track gas or vapor exposure. The sensor cannot measure common noxious elements like asbestos and carbon monoxide.

Users should close the rubberized VOC sensor port cover after each use to protect it from water and dirt. The CP3 is rated IP68 and -810G, making it waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof when its port covers are closed.
