Introducing the Cedar CT8X2 Rugged Tablet – when a consumer tablet just won’t cut it

The Cedar CT8X2

The Cedar CT8X2 is the latest in the Cedar rugged tablet line from Juniper Systems. This next-gen version of the current CT8 tablet offers increased processing power, RAM, and storage, all running on the Android™ 10 operating system. The CT8X2 offers all this and retains the powerful GNSS/GPS functionality of the CT8 at the same affordable price point.

In this article, we will take a closer look at what’s new with the CT8X2 and give you a closer look at the device.

Android™ 10 OS

Running Android 10 the CT8X2 offers a rugged tablet with a powerful mobile operating system. The CT8X2 is a Google Mobile Services (GMS) certified device. This gives users a device with access to the applications they need to be successful in the field.

Increased processing power

The CT8X2 is the most powerful Cedar rugged tablet to date. The octa-core Snapdragon™ CPU from Qualcomm® provides a snappy user experience while using traditional office applications or more demanding data collection software.

The CT8X2 comes with 4GB of RAM, an increase from the 3GB found in the previous model, for running multiple applications or opening large projects.

The onboard storage of the CT8X2 has also seen an increase. Going from 32GB of storage in the CT8 to 64GB on the CT8X2. This increase allows more applications, projects, and data to be stored on the device without needing to rely on expanded storage or needing to offload data constantly. The CT8X2  still offers users the ability to expand its storage space with a MicroSD card of up to 128GB in capacity.

All-day usability

The eight-hour battery life of the CT8X2 keeps the work going all day. The 8000 mAh battery is also removable and can be replaced with a fresh one so the work can continue. Cellular connectivity allows data to be transferred while in the field as well. The device features dual Nano SIM card slots with 4G LTE connectivity. These features allow for users to go a full day uninterrupted.

The included hand strap allows for easy carrying and improved in-hand use while collecting data.

The large eight-inch screen of the CT8X2 offers a bright 450 Nits viewing experience and work surface with a 1280x 800 resolution. These display, in-hand usability, and battery features all equal a device that is capable of providing an excellent in-the-field experience.

Same great GNSS performance

The CT8X2 retains the same great u-blox M8030 GNSS chip as the CT8. The M8030 allows for exceptional GPS accuracy that gives users accuracy as low as one meter in open skies and around five meters under dense tree canopy.

For those users needing greater accuracy than the 1-5 meters of the CT8X2’s internal GNSS, Juniper Systems also manufactures a sub-meter GPS receiver called the Geode™. The CT8X2 connects seamlessly with the Geode to provide users powerful sub-meter accuracy to their data collection.

Rugged vs. consumer

Providing a step up in durability from consumer tablets, the CT8X2 is rated IP67 – making it resistant to water and dust. While the CT8X2 is rugged to its core, the lightweight exterior maintains a sleek design. Thick bumpers on the corners of the device absorb impact when the tablet is dropped and prevent the screen from hitting the surface of the ground first. A screen layered with Gorilla® Glass makes multiple 1-meter drops to concrete no sweat and is scratch resistant.

The CT8X2 is built for use in extreme environments, with the ability to operate in temperatures ranging from -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 C to 60 C).

Used across various industries and applications

From natural resources to geospatial applications, the CT8X2 is versatile and offers a rugged device to meet the demands of many different industries and unique use cases. The device can easily be mounted to a rover rod with a GPS receiver providing an easy-to-use solution for mapping, wetland delineation, or asset mapping.

Inventory and warehouse management are also key industries for the CT8X2. An available 1D/2D barcode reader that connects directly to the back of the device creates an all-in-one solution. The mounts available for the CT8X2 allow the device to be attached to vehicles or forklifts. These mounts allow the device to be easily detached and used for scanning barcodes or entering data.

Other expansion options include an RJ45 port for networking needs, an UHF RFID reader for scanning RFID tags, and a combination Barcode/RFID reader for environments that use both forms of scanning for inventory or asset management.

Affordable

The affordable cost of the CT8X2 makes it a great stepping stone device for those looking to move past consumer devices and take their hardware to the next level. The CT8X2 is familiar to users in its design, OS, and functionality as a tablet. What users gain by switching is peace of mind that the device they bought is built for the environment they work in.
